On Monday, my daughter turned 5 (wow!) So on the Sunday we had a birthday tea with her Grandparents, which meant that I did lots of baking and Daddy blew up lots of balloons. (Check out my Pirate cake, I was very proud of myself!!)

The balloons were a real hit, my Dad started sticking to them to the walls and she thought it was magic. She didn’t notice him rubbing the balloons on his jumper first so she was picking them off the floor and trying to stick them on the wall too, but it just wasn’t working. It was really funny 🙂

I bet that whatever you do seems like magic to some people. People are always telling me that they can’t draw or they don’t know how to combine colours or that they can’t design a leaflet for toffee or they just don’t know how I managed to come up with a logo like that from what they told me. Except it isn’t magic, it really isn’t – to me it’s easy and fun and challenging and exciting – and there’s a process behind most of it. To them it just seems impossible – like sticking a balloon to the wall without rubbing it on your jumper first.

What do you do or offer that people consider to be like magic?

That right there is an amazing thing that you do.

Is there a secret behind it? A process? A ton of enthusiasm? Do you just find it easy? Does it just come naturally?

Whatever it is, you should be celebrating it and telling people about it and making the most of it.

In the end we had balloons all over the ceiling.

Imagine the balloon is your magic thing – the magic thing that only you can do in the way that you do it.

How great would it be if your balloon was plastered all over the wall and ceiling? If lots and lots and lots of people were buying your balloon because they couldn’t get enough of your magic? Some people call it their secret sauce – call it whatever you like.

So imagine you have a balloon in your hands and this balloon is your magic thing – it’s filled with whatever it is that you do that people love. How do you get that balloon onto the wall and ceiling? How do you get that balloon in front of people so they can see what it is that you do? What are the steps that you need to take to make the balloon irresistible to your audience?

First – you need to know what your magic is

Then you need to know who your audience is, so work that out.

After that you need to know what the problem is that your magic solves for your audience.

Then you can work out where your audience spend time – online and offline.

Then you should be able to decide what you need to do to get them to notice you. You might:

– spend time on a particular social network

– create a free offer to get them on your email list so you can tell them more about your magic

– write articles

– keep your blog up to date – or guest blog

– make videos

– speak at places where your audience will be

– run webinars

– go out networking to meet people in person

– create posters to put in relevant places

– leaflet drop

– put ads in relevant publications

– run ads on a social network

– pick up the phone and speak to people

There are so many things you could do, so you need to pick a few and go for it.

So – in honour of my daughters 5th birthday…

– can you describe your business in five words?

– what’s your magic thing?

– how are you getting it in front of the right people?
